Historical note: The First Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division was sent to Vietnam in 1965. It was the third United States Army unit to arrive. In December of 1967, the remainder of the division was deployed to Bien Hoa, South Vietnam in Operation Eagle Thrust. The 101st was the only army division ever airlifted directly into combat. Rickard (b. July 8, 1922) served with the 101st Airborne Division in the European theater of World War II. He was taken prisoner on October 5, 1944 and held until the end of the war in Europe.
